Kairos is a Greek word meaning in “God’s Special Time” or “In the Fullness of Time.” The Kairos weekend is a special time for 24 men incarcerated in the Edinburgh Correctional Facility to spend four days with 28 Kairos volunteers, men from different religious denominations, all focused on creating an atmosphere where the love of God is visible and present. The Kairos ministry is a blessing to all who volunteer to go into the prison, but it offers many opportunities to those who do not feel called to enter the prison.
During the Kairos weekend, there are many talks focusing on the abundance of God’s love. As a symbol of this love, large plates of cookies are placed on each table, and these plates remain filled up throughout the weekend. We need volunteers to help make these cookies. We will use over 800 dozen cookies during the weekend. The Department of Corrections allows only one Cookie Recipe to be used in cooking of the Kairos cookies. We encourage families to pray for the participants while baking the cookies. You can contact Edinburgh Kairos AC to schedule a cookie pickup.
By far the most expensive part of the weekend is the cost of the food. Extra care is taken to provide the best quality food in substantial qualities so that the participants have the experience of God’s banquet. You can help by donating money to help cover the cost of the food. There is no specific amount for each meal. Meal tickets will be filled out and placed by each plate your gift covers. It is a powerful sign to the participants that they are not alone and someone out in the community cares enough to pay for their meal. Please email Edinburgh Kairos AC to arrange collection of donations.
Anyone who wishes to participate can do so by signing up to pray for the weekend in time slots of 30 minutes each day on the 3 Day Virgil web page or joining our email prayer chain. Please consider spending some time in prayer for both the participants and those that volunteer. The coloring of place-mats which are then added to the food table is another way to express God's love. These place-mats often remind participants of their own family, and often the participants will take the place-mats back to the dorm and hang them up as a keepsake from the weekend. If you would like to have a youth group work on a set of these place-mats please contact Edinburgh Kairos AC and we will get you an Agape package.
For this special occasion, the prison will allow people to attend the closing ceremony of the Kairos weekend. Often the participants will share about their experience of the weekend. If you are interested in participating in the closing as a guest, please fill out the Edinburgh # 8 Guest List, and someone from the team will talk to you about all of the forms and the rules for going into the prison. The Kairos ministry is a unique opportunity to follow the directive of Jesus to care for those in prison. Please consider participating in the Edinburgh Kairos ministry.
